A few years ago, I published an essay about the birth of my first child. The headline chosen by the editor was: “When I Wasn’t Paying Attention, My Pregnancy Almost Killed Me,” which pretty much said it all.

Up until landing in the hospital with my baby at just under 33 weeks gestation, I’d had a perfectly normal pregnancy. I was 32 years old…
